A memorial event remembering Dr. Mohammad Assemi, who passed away recently (BBC report) was held at Faz Restaurant in Sunnyvale. Speaking at the event were Dr. Esmail Khoi, Mr. Nooh, Hassan Rajabnejad (blog), Reza Moini, Massoud Sepand, and others. (photos)

Ostad Nooh was invited by the Iranian-American Cultural Society of Maryland (IACS-MD) to talk about the history of satire in Iran.
Talks were given at Towson University in Maryland on Sunday, Nov. 9, and the Iranian Cultural Association in Virginia on Monday, Nov. 10. Two additional informal talks were also given. (flyer, photos)

Dr. Ghadam-Ali Sarami, professor of Persian Language & Literature from Tehran University, was special guest of Hafez class where he spoke eloquently about the philosophy of Hafez and the universal principal of duality. (See photos: 1 - 2 - 3 - 4) During his short visit to the Bay Area, Dr. Sarami also gave talks to the Shahnameh Society on Ferdowsi and Anjoman-e Sokhan on Rumi (Molana). Dr. Esmail Khoi was guest of Hafez class where he was warmly received by members of the class and other guests (photos). He spoke about the poetry of Hafez, placing him firmly at the pinnacle of Persian poetry alongside Ferdowsi, Molavi (Rumi) and Khayyam. He also spoke about the influence of Islam on Persian poetry and how forbidden arts such as painting, sculpture, and music found renewed vigor and refuge in poetry. Mr. Khoi (photos) read from his famous poem (ghassideh), "Gozaresh-e Hezareh" [lit., the thousand-year chronicle], and delved into a discussion of the influence of Islam on Iran's literature and culture. |
