Mr. Mozzafar Darafshi, sometime patron of the class and old friend of Ostad, was honored at a ceremony in Tehran for his 80th birthday and many years of service to the Azari political and literary community. Listen to Ostad's remarks on the occasion.

Hafez class was honored to host poet Simin Behbahani (poetry, article) on her busy tour schedule across the U.S. She was accompanied by her son and the poet Lobat Vala. Several students and Ostad Nooh read poems they had written for her. See photos.

Hafez class was proud to host a special guest, Dr. Mohammad Assemi, publisher of Kaveh (www.kawehjournal.de), the literary journal established in Berlin in 1916. October San Jose's Hafez Class turns 13 (see photos).
September Dr. Ghadam-Ali Sarami, professor of Persian Language & Literature from Tehran University, was special guest of Hafez class where he spoke eloquently about the philosophy of Hafez and the universal principal of duality. (See photos: 1 - 2 - 3 - 4)

During his short visit to the Bay Area, Dr. Sarami also gave talks to the Shahnameh Society on Ferdowsi and Anjoman-e Sokhan on Rumi (Molana). A related article, with a more complete biography of Dr. Sarami, was published in September:

Dr. Esmail Khoi was guest of Hafez class where he was warmly received by members of the class and other guests (photos). He spoke about the poetry of Hafez, placing him firmly at the pinnacle of Persian poetry alongside Ferdowsi, Molavi (Rumi) and Khayyam. He also spoke about the influence of Islam on Persian poetry and how forbidden arts such as painting, sculpture, and music found renewed vigor and refuge in poetry. (An audio transcript of the talk may be available - contact Ostad Nooh.)

On June 13, a gala event (photos) was held in Cupertino celebrating 50 years of Mr. Nooh's professional activities in journalism and literature.

Third printing of Analysis of Satire in Farsi Literature and Media by Mr. Nooh.
May Mr. Nooh was invited to give a talk to the Iranian community of Sacramento (photos) on the history of satire (tanz) in Iranian literature and society. He was kindly introduced by Mr. Hassan Rajabnejad .
April Dr. Esmail Khoi, renowned poet and exiled activist, was the guest of Hafez Class on April 9. Mr. Khoi (photos) read from his famous poem (ghassideh), "Gozaresh-e Hezareh" [lit., the thousand-year chronicle], and delved into a discussion of the influence of Islam on Iran's literature and culture.

June Book Tour: By invitation of Shahrvand Weekly in Dallas, Texas, at Schimelpfenig Public Library on June 23.
May Ostad informed the class of the passing of Mr. Khosrow Shaahaani, famous satirist and writer, in Iran on May 10. Class observed a moment of silence in his memory. Read Shaahaani's last letter to Mr. Nooh in May: .
